Faith vs. Works
It has been stated by many that Mormons believe we can work our way to Heaven. This is not true. We believe that without the atoning sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ, no one could be saved. But because of Him, we all have the chance to return to our Heavenly Father.
It is our belief that because Jesus atoned for our sins, everyone will be resurrected and live forever in one of the kingdoms of Heaven (which will be explained separately and thoroughly) except for a rare few (those who deny the Holy Ghost), but which level of Heaven we will live in depends on our faithfulness and the ordinances we choose to accept. None of us will reach perfection here, but we can be made perfect through the atonement of Jesus Christ and the gift of repentance.
In multiple places in The Holy Bible, it says we will be judged by our works. In the parable of the sheep and the goats, it says the sheep are the people who served God. The goats are the people who did not serve God. It says nothing about professing mere belief – this is belief in action, or works.
The Bible says the following:
If ye love me, keep my commandments. (St. John 14:10)
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. (Revelation 3:16)
Wherefore by their fruits, ye shall know them. (Matthew 7:20)
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and Hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. (Revelation 20: 12-13)
So we believe in the importance of works, but can one work their way to Heaven? No. We are granted access through the grace of God, who sacrificed His only begotten Son. But there are rewards both in Heaven and on Earth for doing our best to follow the example of Jesus Christ.
